What Is Fraud?

Insurance fraud is the act of deceiving or misrepresenting material information for the purpose(s) of profiting from the benefits of an insurance policy. Examples of insurance fraud include:

  • Committing arson or causing a water loss to collect insurance proceeds
  • Submitting claims for items that were not damaged in a loss
  • Staged accidents
  • Providing inflated estimates for damages on a legitimate loss
  • Withholding material information when applying for an insurance policy or when submitting a claim

Specifically, workers' compensation fraud occurs when someone makes false statements or conceals information in order to receive workers' compensation benefits or to lower premiums. Some examples of workers' compensation fraud include:

  • Employees who exaggerate the extent of an injury
  • Health care providers who bill for services that were not rendered or prescribe tests or treatments that are not related to the work injury
  • Employers who pay cash wages, intentionally under-report payroll or misclassify employees in order to reduce premiums
